About the 6MSP

  • The Sixth Meeting of the States Parties (6MSP) to the 1997 Convention on the Prohibition on the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction was held in Zagreb, Croatia from 28 November to 2 December 2005.

  • The 6MSP was the first formal opportunity to assess progress in the application of the Nairobi Action Plan 2005-2009 PDF 193KB , which was adopted at a high political level on 3 December 2004 at the landmark Nairobi Summit on a Mine-Free World.

  • To assess progress in the application of the Nairobi Action Plan – and to highlight priorities for the year ahead – at the 6MSP the Convention’s States Parties warmly welcomed the 100+ page Zagreb Progress Report.

  • Key highlights contained in the Zagreb Progress Report.

  • The 6MSP elected as its President the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Croatia, Ms. Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic. Other high-level participants in the 6MSP included the President of Croatia, Stipe Mesic, the Minister of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Minister of Interior of Burundi, the Minister of Defence of Nicaragua, and His Royal Highness Prince Mired Al-Hussein of Jordan. In addition, 1997 Nobel Peace Prize co-laureate, Jody Williams, and President of the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining, Cornelio Sommaruga, participated in the meeting.

  • Over 600 representatives of 94 States that ratified or have acceded to the Convention, 21 other States, and dozens of international and non-governmental organizations took part in the 6MSP.

  • In addition to warmly welcoming the Zagreb Progress Report, the Convention’s States Parties adopted the Zagreb Declaration PDF 26KB, reaffirming the commitments they made at the 2004 Nairobi Summit on a Mine Free World.

  • On the basis of a proposal put forward by Argentina and Chile, the States Parties amended their transparency reporting format to facilitate voluntary reporting on anti-personnel mines which are retained for purposes permitted by Convention.

  • The States Parties took actions concerning the general operations of the Convention.
