VA: Summary and Statements

MONDAY 21 JUNE

1. Opening of the meeting

The meeting was opened by its Co-Chairs, Elmer Schialer of Peru and Selçuk Sancar of Turkey. The Co-Chairs were supported by their Co-Rapporteurs, Philip Kimpton of Australia and Oscar Edule of Uganda.

In opening the meeting, the Co-Chairs highlighted that they had developed a programme covering following four main areas: (a) promoting implementation of the Convention and progress in achieving the aims of the Cartagena Action Plan; (b) monitoring and reporting progress; (c) identifying opportunities for cooperation and assistance to enhance victim assistance efforts; and, (d) strengthening linkages between the work of the Standing Committee on Victim Assistance and Socio-Economic Reintegration and implementation of other relevant instruments of international humanitarian and human rights law.

2. Overview of the status of implementation of victim assistance in the context of the Convention

The Co-Chairs delivered a statement that recalled key principles and understandings adopted at the Cartagena Summit that guide the work of this Standing Committee

3. Updates from relevant States Parties on achieving the aims of the Cartagena Action Plan

The Co-Chairs provided an opportunity for updates from States Parties that have indicated that they hold responsibility to provide for the well-being of significant numbers of landmine survivors on their activities and plans to facilitate progress in achieving the aims of the Cartagena Action Plan at the national level.
