Ukraine ratified the Convention on 27 December 2005, and the Convention entered into force for Ukraine on 1 June 2006.

Stockpile Destruction (Article 4)

In its initial transparency report submitted in December 2006, Ukraine reported stockpiled anti-personnel mines under its ownership or possession.

On 1 June 2010, Ukraine's deadline for the destruction of its stockpiled anti-personnel mines passed. On 29 December 2014, Ukraine responded to its commitment under Action #5 of the Maputo Action Plan to provide a plan for the destruction of stockpiled anti-personnel mines under its control or jurisdiction by indicating that all information related to the destruction of anti-personnel mines would be forthcoming later in 2015. A total of 5,584,371 anti-personnel mines remain to be destroyed.

Retained Mines (Article 3)

Notwithstanding the obligation to destroy all stockpiled anti-personnel mines, the Convention permits the retention of the minimum number of anti-personnel mines absolutely necessary for the development of and training in mine detection, mine clearance, or mine destruction techniques. As of 2013, Ukraine has reported having retained 605 anti-personnel mines for these permitted purposes.

Mine Clearance (Article 5)

In its initial transparency report, Ukraine reported that there were no areas under its jurisdiction or control in which anti-personnel mines are known or suspected to be emplaced.

At the 2014 Intersessional Meetings Ukraine reported that it suspected a number of areas to have been contaminated by mines. In accordance with Article 5 of the Convention, Ukraine undertakes to destroy or ensure the destruction of all anti-personnel mines in these areas as soon as possible but not later than 1 June 2016.

On 1 November 2018, Ukraine submitted a request to extend its mine clearance deadline and on 14 November 2018 Ukraine submitted additional information to the request. The request was granted at the Seventeenth Meeting of the States Parties and a new deadline set of 1 June 2021.

On 6 May 2019, Ukraine acted upon the decisions of the Seventeenth Meeting of the States Parties by submitting an updated work plan for the implementation of Article 5 of the Convention.

On 8 June 2020, Ukraine submitted a second request to extend its mine clearance deadline, and on 27 August 2020 Ukraine submitted additional information to its request. The request was granted at the Eighteenth Meeting of the States Parties and a new deadline set for 1 December 2023.
