Suriname ratified the Convention on 23 May 2002, and the Convention entered into force for Suriname on 1 November 2002.

Stockpile Destruction (Article 4)

In its initial transparency report submitted on 1 September 2003, Suriname reported stockpiled anti-personnel mines under its ownership or possession or under its jurisdiction or control. 

In its transparency report submitted on 30 April 2005, Suriname reported that it had completed the destruction of all stockpiled anti-personnel mines.

In total, Suriname reported having destroyed 146 mines.

Mine Clearance (Article 5)

In its initial transparency report, Suriname reported areas under its jurisdiction or control in which anti-personnel mines were known or suspected to be emplaced.

In accordance with Article 5 of the Convention, Suriname undertook to destroy or ensure the destruction of anti-personnel mines in these areas as soon as possible but not later than 1 November 2012.

On 21 April 2005, during a ceremony attended by delegates from Honduras and Brazil, Suriname announced it had fulfilled its obligation under Article 5 of the Convention use.

At the 2005 Meeting of the Standing Committee on Mine Clearance, the Organization of American States announced that Suriname had finished its mine clearance operation on 27 April 2004.
