Djibouti ratified the Convention on 18 May 1998, and the Convention entered into force for Djibouti on 1 March 1999.

Stockpile Destruction (Article 4)

In its initial transparency report submitted on 16 January 2003, Djibouti reported stockpiled anti-personnel mines under its ownership or possession or under its jurisdiction or control. 

In its transparency report submitted in 2004, Djibouti reported that it had completed the destruction of all stockpiled anti-personnel mines.

In total, Djibouti reported having destroyed 1,188 mines.

Retained Mines (Article 3)

Notwithstanding the obligation to destroy all stockpiled anti-personnel mines, the Convention permits the retention of the minimum number of anti-personnel mines absolutely necessary for the development of and training in mine detection, mine clearance, or mine destruction techniques.

Djibouti has reported having retained 2,996 anti-personnel mines for these permitted purposes.

Mine Clearance (Article 5)

In its initial transparency report, Djibouti reported areas under its jurisdiction or control in which anti-personnel mines were known or suspected to be emplaced.

In accordance with Article 5 of the Convention, Djibouti undertook to destroy or ensure the destruction of all anti-personnel mines in these areas as soon as possible but not later than 1 March 2009.

At the 2004 Meeting of the Standing Committee on Mine Clearance, Djibouti announced that as of 29 January 2004, it had fulfilled its obligation under Article 5 of the Convention.
