Cyprus ratified the Convention on 17 January 2003, and the Convention entered into force for Cyprus on 1 July 2003.

Stockpile Destruction (Article 4)

In its initial transparency report submitted in February 2004, Cyprus reported stockpiled anti-personnel mines under its ownership or possession.

In its transparency report submitted in 2008, Cyprus indicated that as of July 2007, it had completed the destruction of all stockpiled anti-personnel mines. In total, Cyprus reported having destroyed 48,916 mines.

Retained Mines (Article 3)

Notwithstanding the obligation to destroy all stockpiled anti-personnel mines, the Convention permits the retention or the minimum number of anti-personnel mines absolutely necessary for the development of and training in mine detection, mine clearance, or mine destruction techniques.

As of 2020, Cyprus has reported having retained 435 anti-personnel mines for these permitted purposes.

Mine Clearance (Article 5)

In its initial transparency report, Cyprus reported areas under its jurisdiction or control in which anti-personnel mines are known or suspected to be emplaced.

In accordance with Article 5 of the Convention, Cyprus undertook to destroy or ensure the destruction of all anti-personnel mines in these areas as soon as possible but not later than 1 July 2013.

On 30 April 2012, Cyprus submitted a request to extend its mine clearance deadline. The request was granted at the Twelfth Meeting of the States Parties and a new deadline set for 1 July 2016.

On 27 March 2015, Cyprus submitted a second request for an extended mine clearance deadline. This request was granted at the Fourteenth Meeting of the States Parties and a new deadline set for 1 July 2019.

On 2 February 2018, Cyprus submitted a third request for an extended mine clearance deadline. This request was granted at the Seventeenth Meeting of the States Parties and a new deadline set for 1 July 2022.

On 9 February 2021, Cyprus submitted a fourth request to extend its mine clearance deadline. The request will be considered by the Nineteenth Meeting of the States Parties in November 2021.
