First International Pledging Conference Since the Convention’s entry into force on 1 March 1999, progress has been achieved in the implementation of its key obligations. However, on the eve of the Convention’s seventeenth anniversary, challenges remain. Thousands of people continue to fall victim to anti-personnel mines and countless lives continue to be affected by these weapons in conflict and post-conflict settings. With the adoption of the Maputo Action Plan 2014-2019 and the efforts of the States Parties to strengthen the Convention’s architecture and its Implementation Support Unit, the States Parties are in a better position than ever to make unprecedented progress towards putting an end to the era of anti-personnel mines. We are on “the Last Stretch” of meeting our common finite objective; a joint commitment by all stakeholders will get us there. Taking the first step on “the Last Stretch”, Chile, as President of the Fifteenth Meeting of the States Parties of the Convention (15MSP), will lead the way with an International Pledging Conference: Wednesday, 2 March 2016, 15:00 – 18:00
The pledging conference will set us on the road to the 15MSP and contribute to the objectives of the Presidency, which include the revitalization of the initial enthusiasm of all stakeholders with our emblematic Convention.
