Media Accreditation Opens for the Maputo Review Conference on a Mine-Free World

Geneva and Maputo – The Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention’s third five-year review is to take place in Mozambique from 23-27 June 2014.

The high-level meeting known as The Maputo Review Conference on a Mine-Free World will gather over 1,000 representatives of States and international and non-governmental organizations.

This is the second time that a formal diplomatic meeting of the Convention will have been convened in Maputo.

In 1999, soon after entry into force of the Convention, Mozambique hosted the Convention’s First Meeting of the States Parties (1MSP).

Why Mozambique?

Returning to Maputo fifteen years after the international community first gathered in the Mozambican capital is significant.

In the 1990s Mozambique was suffering one of the greatest tragedies caused by anti-personnel mines. When the Convention was adopted, the clearance of all mined areas in Mozambique was a distant prospect, and perhaps to some, unachievable. At this time however, all that remains in Mozambique is one specific challenge including along its border with Zimbabwe, which will be cleared by the end of 2014.

What is the Maputo Review Conference?

The Maputo Review Conference is a formal diplomatic meeting of the 161 States Parties to the Convention.

Other States, including China and the United States of America, and dozens of international and non-governmental organizations will be attending as observers.

The purpose of the Maputo Review Conference is to assess progress in the pursuit of the Convention’s humanitarian aims over the past five years and to adopt the Maputo Action Plan to guide efforts to universalise and implement the Convention during the period 2014 to 2019.

In addition, the Convention’s implementation machinery will be updated with decisions expected that will demonstrate the Convention’s tradition of innovation to address changing circumstances and new challenges.

The Maputo Review Conference will feature a high-level segment on 26-27 June and involve high-level representatives signing the Maputo Declaration, reaffirming their commitment to end the suffering caused by anti-personnel mines.
