Two days before the First International Pledging Conference is to take place at the UN Geneva, Chile, the Convention's Presidency and the Implementation Support Unit (ISU) have started to receive public pledges.
H.E. Bert Koenders, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands announced a contribution of €45 million for the next four years, "to amplify the message that [the Netherlands] wants the world to take serious action on demining". In addition, the Netherlands has pledged €50,000 to the work of the ISU.
Also on 29 February, Germany’s Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament, H.E. Ambassador Michael Biontino, signed an agreement to contribute €40,000 to the Convention’s Implementation Support Unit (ISU). Germany has contributed to mine action for more than 20 years, and through annual voluntary contributions, to the work of the ISU for over 10 years. The agreement was signed by Ambassador Biontino and the ISU's Acting Director, Juan Carlos Ruan.
