Geneva 13 March 2015 – The link between Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention’s commitment to landmine survivors and the broader disability rights community was strengthened during the second week of the 28th session of the United Nations’ Human Rights Council.
Also on 10 March, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines’ Campaigns and Communications Manager, Firoz Ali Alizada, along with the Director of the Convention’s Implementation Support Unit, Kerry Brinkert, participated in an informal “fireside chat” on the rights of persons with disabilities. The purpose of the event, which was organized by the International Disability Alliance, the UNOHCHR and the International Development Law Organization, was to further explore the connection between the rights of persons with disabilities, rule of law and the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
On 12 March, efforts to strengthen the bridge between disability rights and landmine victim assistance continued with a meeting between the Members of the Convention’s Committee on Victim Assistance and the UNOHCHR’s Human Rights and Disability Advisor, Facundo Chávez Penillas. Representatives of all four Committee Members – Afghanistan, Costa Rica, Senegal and Thailand – took part in this meeting. Committee Members explored with Mr. Chavez ways that the work of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability could be mutually reinforcing. The Committee’s efforts during the 28th session of the United Nations’ Human Rights Council were carried out pursuant to its mandate to “(take) the discussion on meeting the needs and guaranteeing the rights of mine victims to other fora where relevant issues are debated.” The Committee will continue this effort on 25 March when it addresses the United Nations’ Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
