10.B.  Clearing  mined areas

The 11MSP continued receiving updates from States Parties that have previously been granted an extension on Article 5 mine clearance deadlines. The following States Parties provided updates: Mozambique, Venezuela, Yemen, Mauritania, Senegal, Peru, Ecuador, Thailand, Croatia, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Cambodia, Tajikistan and Colombia. The ICBL and ICRC shared views in response to these updates.

The following other States Party that is in the process of implementing Article 5 provided updates on national demining efforts: Afghanistan.

11.  Special session on two decades of the anti-landmines movement

An innovative, special session was staged to reflect on two decades of efforts to end the suffering and casualties caused by anti-personnel mines. The programme featured landmine survivors Chris Moon and Song Kosal introducing key episodes in the movement’s history, including the original call by non-governmental organisations and survivors for the international community to take action on anti-personnel mines, the first review conference of CCW in 1995-96, the Ottawa Process in 1996-97, the entry into force of the Convention in 1999 and the early years of implementation, advances made in mine clearance and victim assistance, the ongoing role of survivors in the Convention, the Convention’s place in broader development perspective and the importance of the 2004 and 2009 summits on a mine-free world.

The special session culminated in an address to the plenary by a young woman and a young man representing the youth who were participating in a parallel leadership forum. The President of the 11MSP summarised key lessons learned from two decades of the anti-landmines movement and then opened the floor for delegations to share their perspectives. The following delegations shared views: the ICBL, Brazil, Norway and His Royal Highness Prince Mired Raad Al Hussein of Jordan.
